Common Rounds for Modelers

Of the almost 100 ammunition combinations only a few are of interest to the WWII modeler. Firstly, none of the chemical agent rounds (H, CNS) were used in combat. The T18 canister was not issued in the ETO and seems to have been little used (if at all) in the Pacific. The T16 illumination round was a late war item and uncommon. Brass cartridge cases dominated and the metal containers were only used in the Pacific and only in the last year of the war. The cloverleaf bundles, while common, did not have prominent markings. From a 1945 ETO ammunition expenditure report it appears that HE rounds with the M48 series of PD fuzes were used about 3:1 relative to those with the M54 TSQ. Pruning off the less common items, six different rounds can represent the typical WWII ammunition types for modeling.

For most of the rounds the package stenciling was the same. The stencils that changed were the AIC symbol, Type and Model of projectile and fuze, ICC Freight Classification, and Lot number, and weight.
